Students MUST have written parent permission (can be included in AUP)
    • To publish video on the web
    • To appear in video published on the web

Creative Commons - copyright free audio/visual media (need to bring to student's attention in 3-4-5th grades that they need to consider copyright when using media).
  • ccmixter.org - for music
    • Students can copyright their own stuff (ex. Garageband)
    • Students can use music on this site but may need to attribute (give the creator credit) and provide the link to its location on ccmixter.

Podcast

  • "Radio" style shows that occur on a regular basis (i.e. weekly or monthly)
  • Must be saved in as an mp3 file
  • General steps to create podcasts are: Create ---> capture ---> edit ---> publish
  • mp3 recorders can be purchased, but the iPhone and most smart phones already come with one.
  • Audioboo.fm - FREE iPhone App for recording and publishing in one easy step. No editing capability though. Can be used to embed audio into a blog
  • Audacity - FREE Audio Editor can be downloaded to your computer. Allows for editing. Can import music and add voice over.
    • Search Youtube for tutorials.
    • Students can register podcasts on iTunes to reach a larger audience

Vodcast

  • Consider the quality of the mic you are using - may need an external mic.

  • Can use iMovie or Movie Maker ---> editing
  • Youtube or Teachertube ---> publishing
    • Recommendation to get media up on Cloud and off the user's computer
  • Can be used for digital storytelling and news podcasting
  • Ican Festival - high quality student made video. These are good examples of the kinds of videos kids can make.
  • Parents - a student made video that was very powerful and used in LA schools to teach kids about being safe in a car.
  • Archive.org - great place to store media for FREE

Screencasting


  • Jing - Download a FREE version for sharing your computer screen during a vodcast. A PRO version (fee based) is available for adding webcam.
    • Upload to Youtube
    • Embed in a Blog
  • Students can do a screencast for sharing with others. Especially when they are not in school.
  • Teachers can use to teach students who are not at school.
  • Professional Development purposes - make videos to show other teachers how to do something on the computer.
  • Ustream.ty - FREE live stream from iPhone (App) for mobile. Can also live stream from a computer. Site can be made password protected. Give the URL to parents or others so they can watch class performances from their office/home.
